After the Japanese had bombed two airfields in China and dealt our Air Force a serious setback, Gleason was sent there to teach the locals industrial sabotage and to stall the Japanese advance south. Gleason said the Chinese army had run off in the face of the advancing Japanese. It was left to him, two other Americans and handful of Chinese who carried their supplies to slow the enemy down. The numbers speak for themselves. During their time there in 1944, they blew up over 150 bridges, destroyed 50,000 tons of munitions and severely crippled the last Japanese offensive in Southeast China.
