独立日，川普总统在林肯纪念堂前发表重要演说：

	1775年6月，大陆会议在驻扎在波士顿、纽约一带的革命武装的基础上创建了统一的军队，并任命伟人乔治华盛顿为总司令。大陆军队在福吉谷度过了痛苦寒冬，之后在特拉华水域恢复了荣耀、又在约克镇大胜康沃利斯。我们的军队操纵“宽衣”（语焉不详，且以“宽衣”代之），祂越过堡垒、祂占领机场，祂做了一切必须做的。在麦克亨利堡，在熊熊烈火中，只有胜利。黎明来临时，星条旗挥舞着挑衅。^【注】
	In June of 1775, the Continental Congress created a unified army out of the revolutionary forces encamped around Boston and New York and named after the great George Washington, commander in chief. The Continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge, found glory across the waters of the Delaware and seized victory from Cornwallis of Yorktown. Our army manned the [unclear], it ran the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do. And at Fort McHenry, under “the rockets red glare,” it had nothing but victory. And when dawn came, their star-spangled banner waved defiant.

美国独立战争（又称美国革命战争，the American Revolutionary War, also known as the American War of Independence 1775–1783）。大陆会议在费城举行，1774年9月5日为第一届大陆会议，1775年5月10日为第二届大陆会议，这次会议决定把殖民地武装组建成正规的大陆军队。
