Indian Navy mourns deaths of personnel martyred aboard INS Ranveer, extends condolences to families

Mumbai: The Indian Navy has announced the names of the sailors who were martyred and injured in the explosion onboard the warship INS Ranveer at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard late on Tuesday evening. 

At least three sailors were martyred and 11 others injured in an explosion onboard the Indian Navy warship INS Ranveer at Mumbai's Naval Dockyard late on Tuesday evening.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained. A Board of Inquiry has been constituted to investigate the incident.

"Adm R Hari Kumar #CNS & all personnel of #IndianNavy extend heartfelt condolences to the families of Krishan Kumar MCPO I, Surinder Kumar MCPO II & AK Singh MCPO II, who succumbed to injuries in the unfortunate incident onboard INS Ranvir. We stand by you in this difficult times," the Indian Navy said in a statement on its official Twitter handle.. 

According to the Indian Navy, the injured in the incident are PV reddy (age 23), Yogeshkumar Gupta (age 36), Gopaal Yadav (age 21), Shubham Dev (age 20), Harikumar (age 22), Shailendra Yadav age (22), Tanmay Dar (age 22), L Surendrajit Singh (age 39), Komendra Singh (age 24), Kapil (age 21) and Avinash Varma (age 22.

"All dead bodies sent to JJ Hospital," the Indian Navy statement added. 

Ship returning to its base port soon

INS Ranveer is a warship originally stationed on the east coast at Vizag. It was in Mumbai since November 2021 and was due to return to base soon. 

On Tuesday evening, there was a sudden explosion inside the ship. At least three sailors were martyred and 11 others were injured in the incident. 

According to the spokesperson of the defence department, the crew members present on the ship reached immediately after the explosion and managed to control the fire caused by the explosion, due to which the ship has been saved from further damage. 

Indian Navy sources said that weapons and explosives equipped on the ship were also safe from the blast.

INS Ranveer joined the Indian Navy on April 21, 1986

INS Ranveer is the first warship of the Ranveer class. It was inducted into the Indian Navy on April 21, 1986. It was created in the former Soviet Union. 

The present Chief of Naval Staff R. Harikumar has also been in charge of this vessel in the past. The sailors injured in Tuesday's blast have been admitted to INS Ashwini Hospital. Also, no information has been given yet regarding the deceased.

INS Ranveer armed with deadly weapons

Affiliated with regiments of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and the Ladakh Scouts, INS Ranveer's on-board weapons include surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft and anti-missile guns, torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets. 

The engagement of a naval warship with an army regiment is more of a tradition than an operation. INS Ranveer's maritime roles include coastal and offshore patrols, maritime patrols, maritime diplomacy, counter-terrorism and anti-piracy operations.
