By 1998, the total number was approximately 2470+, including all large and smaller ones, with an annual production rate of about 125-200 per year (The actual yearly production number depends on several factors, e.g., requirements, situation, materials, designs, ...etc.). After the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, the Politburo voted UNANIMOUSLY to double the annual production rate of nuclear weapons. This order, one of the eight emergency response programs totally, was carried out immediately as the highest priority among all. Now fully 15+ years later, you tell me how many in total China has now, even without any increase of the production rate due to the quick deterioration of the strategic environment China is currently facing. (However, this is the kicker - Most of the warheads produced years ago were not MIRVs. Those at the earlier times were of larger yields and lesser in numbers. During the last decade or so, most of the warheads newly produced have been changed to MIRVs, with much smaller yields but significantly more in numbers.)
Everybody in the world will shake and tremble when China decides to announce the actual number of her nuclear weapons, just like the actual size of the gold reserves it hoards in secrecy! The time is drawing very close now. Just watch.
