to turn it into a carrier-bound folding version is not that straight forward.
The wings, the "belly" and the landing gears have to be "re-structured" to maintain the A/C's mechanical and aerodynamic integrity while under much higher stresses, and at the same time to minimize the added weights due to the new folding mechanism, launch and arresting hooks and stronger structures. Of course, ease of production, maintainability and reliability have to be satisfied too. |
