China prepares for its 60th anniversary

Chinese citizens and government workers have been preparing for months for their upcoming celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1st. Parts of Beijing have been shut down several times, allowing for rehearsals of a once-in-a-decade military parade, multiple artistic performances and shows, fireworks and more. Security concerns are high as well, bringing out large details of security personnel and equipment. Collected here are images from the past several weeks of people around China preparing to celebrate their National Day. (37 photos total)

I hope the Chinese people will grasp the future by setting an example by changing the environmental standards. Creating non-poluting transportation and energy sources would be a nice start, followed by a sustainable econmoic system. Relying on American and EU consumerism only profits the big players (politicians and corrupt bussinessmen). If the Chinese people don't take hold of the environmental impact they are making their actions will expedite the destruction of our species. This is about the WORLD, not about China! Clean up your act! Clean up the WORLD; set an example!

i dont think people who showed their patriotism are rich or someone has high social status.maby you think they are free from money or jobs, so they have plenty of energy to dispaly their patritism. But in fact its not most people do in china. Some are old people or even the poor, are really proud of their nations, because these poor believe they can be rich throuh their hard working, so they longing their motherland's birthday. The poor will always be poor without their hard workig no matter in any places, you even in U.S.Chinese have their own faith, and we are proud of our nation.

Happy Birthday China.

Chairman Mao save China during the war, "The Long March" , yet that was the past. China have to move forward, produce better quality and severely punish those that produce harmful items, especially food and toys. All the resources are cheap yet people are so greedy and by producing inferior products, we tried to stay away from them.

Hope this year, there will be a change.

So many brainwashed Chinese here... A stupid celebration can improve our lives? It's a shame to see those young soldiers and normal people were organized to perform their 'happiness' in celebrating this 60s' anniversary event.

I am posting this in China, I am a 25 years old Chinese young man working for a US company. What I see in this country is 90% people are poor. It will cost over 50 years of somebody's salary to own a house in the major cities, 20 or 30 years' salary in the secondary cities. We have no free internet (Youtube, Google.com, blogspot, flicker, etc. were banned. Sometimes even Wikipedia) All TV channels were broadcasting brain-washing news everyday. We have the highest suicide rate and the unnatural death rate every year. Corrupted government officials embezzle public fund for billions was a common news to the normal Chinese people.

I hate to see this celebration wasting my hard-earned taxes, it could be used to help those poor farmers and children who are still suffering after the 5-12-2008 earthquake. Or at least making it at a smaller scale.

I am a Chinese and have been studying, living and working in New Zealand, Singapore, UK for the last decade. I am not a communist and I work in financial industry without any political involvement.

For those who say they love China but hate CCP: it is CCP who is running Chinese economy, building infrastructure, setting up the foreign policy, designing social welfare and education system, pushing a nation of 1.3 billion people moving forward every year. In fact, it is in the Chinese Constitution that CCP works for Chinese people, and so far it works pretty well and you cannot fully separate Chinese people and CCP.

Maybe KMT had the same vision, but even with the full US support, they lost to CCP and went to Taiwan hopelessly. The difference between KMT and CCP at the time: KMT has the US support, CCP had the support from Chinese people.

CCP is not perfect, this imperfection is evident in any other political parties around the world because human beings are imperfect. But CCP has evolved and improved so much in the past 60 years, continue to lead this nation to fight poverty, to rationalize its economy, to stand on an international stage. Some part of the world now perceives China as a threat, 60 years ago they were happily invading this nation for centuries, It was Chinese people worked hard to turn things around, it was CCP worked hard to make this happen, West did not do much good, 60 years ago they were killing Chinese people for centuries, now they came up with so called human rights argument as if they were the good guys.

Today some people have mixed feelings about China, but this celebration is well deserved by Chinese people and Chinese leaders, full credit given. The future has more challenges for China to overcome, and I believe the nation is well placed to surprise the world again. Happy Birthday China =)

I cant agree more with those views that critize the stupid wasteful celebration of this so called great nation. I can't agree more with the views that ccp usurped the authority from KMT and Mao, a tyrant almost destroyed the nationed. Only because of Deng, we are what we are now. I hate Chinese government! i hate CCP.

to 770:
about brain-wash, my opinion is we can understand someone can brain-wash one person for his whole life, and someone can brain-wash whole country people for long years. but you think CPT is capable to brain-wash a country with 1.5 billion people for 60 years!? if they did, CIA must send some persons to learn how they did that!
i don`t know if you are chinese or not, but i am. i am born here and grow up here, and i have been to Europe and USA, i have education and i read books. people here know all these disaster factors you mentioned. no body think CPT is perfect, but we are still Chinese, we love our country and we want celebrate its 60th aniversary, so this means we are brain-washed? so what we surpposed to do on this date to show that we are not brain-washed? go on the street to cry for democracy and fight police?
maybe you wish so, but most people just make their celebration and after holidays they work more hard to make their country more better place. that is what we can do for our motherland.

and one more thing, people here used to believe foreign media more than CPT media (you can see that CPT brain-wash does not work so well). but after TIBET incident, no body believe CNN anymore, because they say all lies and they insult whole Chinese people (you can see that CNN does worse job brain-wash even than CPT). maybe you say i am brain-washed by CPT on this incident, but i have many friends in Tibet, they are there that time and they see what happened in the street. you see i prefer to believe what they said but not what CNN said.

after all, the people who lived here know more than you guys about their own country, they know all these bad factors and because they suffered all these by themselves but not you. if you want to help them, show your sincerity, calling them brain-wash is not a good choice.

one more time, CPT does not eqaul to China. if you don`t like CPT, it is fine. if you don`t like Chine, it is also no problem. but when Chinese celebrate their motherland annivesary, let them be, don`t call them brain-washed.it does not make sense.

i am chinese,i love our country and pround of her.
though i am poor now,i need to work hard to earn my living,i still love my country.Someone said we have no free,no human rights, but i can do many thing i like in lows here and in major times i am happy.
Mao Zedong tried built a equal country with no gap between the wealthy and poor and everyone had equal human rights but he failed. Cos people need food first, then they need some other things more,we say that material is the base of ethical. So Deng Xiaoping chose a different way we are walking now and we are being stronger everyday.
I confess that we have a lot of problem need our government to settle ,but I believe they can hand them. The developing bring us a lot of bad thing, but if you want something you must to pay for them, everything has two sides in your eyes.
I'am lucky, cos i grow up in a strong country and no need to let my head shaking at the Japanese bayonetss in the air.I am lucky to living in a peace world and i hope there is no war in the middle eastern again. No people dies in war.
I have to say that again,i love china! i love our people!God bless the world in peace!
My English is not good, there are more than i can say in my heart. So i stop my fingers typing ,haha.By the way welcome to China to see a true China.

I am a Chinese from Medan, Indonesia.
I'm far away from my ancestors country but I am proud...I'm chinese!
China will become the strong and increasingly strong country. We All had the inheritance blood and the characteristics from our ancestors that was great, could remain in all difficulty situation (himself) for the sake of the better future (his children).

Come on, the history proved that the person of Chinese generally often showed his egoism and At last made we be easy be separated to one another. Seen again, the previously nation china was the most nation that was often insulted and insulted by the other nation, resulting from retardation and poverty of the time previously. My hope so that with increasingly the strength of our country, and then we will be more appreciated by the other nation, including the country that I live now. There was not again the term "Ganyang China / Crushed China"

This event was mostly a propaganda event aimed at those inside Chinese borders, not foreign countries. I call it propaganda because I know that many of Beijing's residents were *required* to 'volunteer' for the event. The government is successfully creating a nationalistic mindset...but a lot of people inside and out know the dark underbelly of this "Great Nation".

I am a Chinese as well. In the earlier time, i had ever tried to study and live abroad, such as USA. But now I gave up that stupid idea coz I know my country is getting stronger and stronger and this nationality is capable making her citizens being proud. I also want to build my country little by litter by my efforts. In the past, Chinese had been suffered for a long time by various reasons, internal or external, now it is the time to awake. Just like Mr. Hu said, harmonious society is the ultimate target for worldwide people, this is the cuture separated from chinese traditional phylosophy, which I think is much more valuable than so called capitalism, it drive the human by greed, like the animal. You may refer this to current finance crisis. After all, it may take long way for Chinese to archieve the goal. Happy birtherday, my homelolan

Every country holds celebrations whether it be 4th July or the Queens jubilee, or any other commemorative event. They are an important part of national pride, for the most part inspire hope, and sometimes demonstrate accomplishments. At the same time, every country has other 'better uses' for the financial cost of such celebrations whether it be for national poverty, healthcare or worldwide relief.

As for those criticising the CCP and whilst I'd love to see you try and do a better job, I would not want to dare chance it and see so much accomplishment poured down the drain. Every government of the world has problems, and most governments have at some good points. However, I think of all the countries in this world, the leadership of China must be about the hardest task amongst them all. The cultural, economic, agricultural, industrial and educational diversities in China are on a vast scale and it is, I think, an incredibly awkward task balancing policies and governance to benefit all. I have far greater respect for the Chinese government over almost any other in the world - especially when you consider how much they have accomplished in such a short time. No change happens overnight, but China's changes have happened, and are happening, much faster than any western county ever achieved. It's a little ironic that whilst the rights of the Chinese people steadily increase, people's rights in the West slowly get whittled away and diminish, ruled by fear-inspiring nanny-state style leadership. China promises prosperity, and I firmly believe they will accomplish that in abundance.

I am not Chinese, but have been in China for several years now, and I wish China and all Chinese my very best wishes on this 60th anniversary.

I feel happy that there are some people are protecting our CHINESE honor here. i want to speak to someone who don't understand China——don't just speaking bad words to china, you should know china closely . there is an old saying in China:what you heard is not true, what you see is true.

DON'T denigrate the great person CHAIRMAN MAO,after all he lead the chinese people disengage from being colonized by some foreign countries, though he once made some fault in his life. This doesn't affect our CHINESE from respecting him.During his period,we CHINESE people constantly strive to become stronger and independence.During his period , we CHINESE people pulled together.Although we are poor physically that time ,but we are rich mentally.

TO MY OPINION , CCP is not so bad ,though it's not perfect. i think every party has its own deficiency, but we can try our best to built it more well ."ALL FOR PEOPLE, ALL FOR THE COUNTRY"! I think this is the basic thing, no matter which party is reigning.

pls:i 'm a college teacher in China, i was born after 1980's, and i believe "the mean ideology".

Capitalism is a powerful dynamic for economic development. A socialist government is an arbitrator to protect the people from exploitation. The recent global financial crisis has clearly broken the myth of the invisible hand/market force. I think that my country is making history by vigorously constructing a socialist country with Chinese characteristics which allows the coexistence of capitalism and socialism. It is important to strike a good balance between interest of the economy (capitalism) and the people (socialism).

fabulous!
I'm so proud of it!
All chinese people want is a peaceful and prosperous environment, and CPC is willing to struggle for it. so why do you keep on complaining about it? I'm from china, I live a happy life here, and people I know all live happily, too. Maybe there're many flaws in china, but everything will be OK in the future.
chinese people has suffered a lot from Qing Dynasty to 1949, they don't want to suffer again, they don't want any war anymore. All they want is peace, so you americans, or people from any other countries, pls don't bother China with your own dogmatic opinions, just leave them alone.

China is one nation rich in history, culture & traditions. I pray progress will not wipe out all her riches, historically, culturally & traditionally, she had accumulated all these centuries for the sake of development.
I'm an oversea Chinese, born & bred in another country. But I felt proud being a Chinese, when I witnessed the 2008 Olympic opening ceremony. A ceremony full of pomp & granduer which displayed China's history & her achievements. I have seen a number of world games opening ceremonies & none can beat this one.
I'm sure China's 60th anniversary celebration & parades should be with same graduer or maybe better than the 2008 Olympic opening night.

812.So many brainwashed Chinese here...

Or at least making it at a smaller scale.

i cannot help agree with 812.it is a show of force ,it is a threat to those opposed to the ccp and to democracy.i love china .love the common people but i strongly hate the corrpted officials and inefficient government which ignores the suffering of the poor who are the absolute majority of chinese people. in essence ,ccp is an elusive liar to chinese people .

770. 742
let the facts speak -
Nanjing massacre - 300,000 chinese civilian and captured soldiers murdered;
vs
Dayuejin (great leap forward) then 3 years of massive starvation (man-made disaster, but most chinese today still

call it NATURAL disaster - permanently brain washed, or brain dead slave people) directly single-handedly murdered

by your madman - conservative estimate is 30,000,000 dead.

Now tell me whose math is wrong?

If you want more numbers and facts to undo your washed brain, I will be happy to entertain.

--------
I am a Chinese,I am not good at English, but I want to tell you:

In your knowledge of history,Japanese invasion of China in just the same as Nanjing massacre.
But in fact,it is Eight-year war!
In 1937 to 1945,The Japanese killed 30 million Chinese people! Not 300,000!
I am surprised a person can slander China who thought that "Nanjing massacre" is "Eight-year war".

The 20th century, 50 years to 60 years,
"Encyclopaedia Britannica" said the Chinese famine of the twentieth century the greatest famine, "causing as many as 20 million people were killed."
Note -- "famine"

1937-1945 Chinese Anti-Japanese War
1945-1949 China's civil war
1950-1953 War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea
Continuous wars so that we have lost the ability to produce food, and yet suffered a famine in.

During the Cultural Revolution(1966-1976), 20 million people have died.
Mao Tse-tung was once a great man,he made China's re-emergence,but he made a terrible mistake in his later years,he has brought disaster to the Chinese.
I admit that we have experienced an era filled with errors and wild.

Now our country is indeed in human rights there are many problems, but at least we are still alive, and gradually started to rich.
We can even begin to enjoy some luxuries,we have more than half of the people in this world happier.

These are all the facts.

somebody say it wast public money, i do not agree! so many people are working hard for this celebration, and reasonable get the paid, so this is only what the money transfer from one to another!
our motherland has nowerdays' acheive because so many pepole worked so hard and maybe somebody didnot concern what they can have , so lots of people fell it's time to think back and look forward and enjoy the present .that is only a big important part, once we decide to do, we should make it great! we hate the behavior only if we spend so much money, but the result is unsuccessful. hope to see a great party! congratulations to my motherland!

As running from 1949 to 2009, China changed a lot.
Someone blames that China is not democracy, no freedom on speeds, publishing, immigration and etc. The fact, people in China enjoys much freedoms than they think. Do you see China people travels all over the world?
They can make their speeds and publishings easily within China area. Many speeds and publishings are banded because of many reasons. This and the set up of a legal system are both the most important area for China leaders to coop with.
For other problems, poor people, crimes, social problems, Racial discrimination, all can be found in developed countries and areas.
Please look into your own country's problems before blaming China.

We hope China is approaching a way to give out all policies bases on peoples' voices.

Congratulation on 60th Birthday, China
Happy Birthday

I was a Chinese national, but now a Singaporean. My change of nationality doesn't change how people around perceive me, the only material change is a new passport that allows me visa free to parts of the world that were once not so travel friendly.

I don't really despise CCP. I mean it did a lot of horrible things in the past, and distorted a lot of truth and all. But it also created a economic miracle that every rational man has to admit. There are problems of course, but any democratic change must be progressive. You can't change nothing in one day.

And there's misunderstanding about the celebration too, because some of you guys say it's a waste of money. But I tell you, looking good is as important as being good. And I guess it's a good chance for Chinese people to showcase that we are no longer as backward as they want to picture us. This is also applicable for overseas Chinese in Taiwan and Singapore.

Regarding MAO, it's too complicated for foreigners to understand why we'd like to stay brainwashed. The world is full of ugly truth and that I know, but being nasty and cynical are not a constructive at all.
