As the calendar year turned, George Soros owned less gold, and fewer gold miners.
That, at least, is what the hedge-fund manager’s quarterly portfolio disclosure shows. Soros Fund Management’s stake in the most popular gold exchange-traded fund, the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), fell to 600,000 shares as of Dec. 31, from 1.3 million three months earlier.
Soros’ fund held 1.5 million shares in the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), a fall from 2.3 million shares at the end of the previous quarter, and 2 million shares in the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ), from 2.4 million.
Keep in mind that the Dec. 31 disclosure may or may not reflect what the manager currently holds.
