Demonstrations in Timisoara on the 16 and 17 December 1989 

were combated with heavy-handed brutality from the Army and 

the Securitate. The number of casualties was initially estimated 

at several thousand, but subsequent investigations put the figure 

at 122.

she subsequently also ordered the cremation 

of 40 bodies to avoid their identification.

This event was to play a clinical role in triggering the revolution 

of 22 December 1989, which would overthrow the Ceausescus’ 

from power and lead to the collapse of Communism in Romania 

(K. McDermott and M. Stibbe (Eds), Revolution and Resistance 

in Eastern Europe, Berg: 20o6).

Elena Ceausescu was also responsible for the serious death rate amongst 

women through her influential pro-natal policies. As chairperson of the 

National Women’s Council she nationalised what should have been a private 

affair, supported by her husband’s rhetoric that a pregnant woman was

 ‘everybody’s concern’ because family life was a ‘socialised private problem’

 (Mark Almond, The rise and fall of Nicolae and Elena Ceausescu, 

Chapmans: 1992) . Concern over falling birth rates meant that the 

megalomania of the Ceausescus’ thus even extended into the bedroom, 

with propaganda claiming that it was a woman’s duty to rear children for

her country. Methods of birth control, including condoms and the 

contraceptive pill, were either not available or routinely failed quality control. 

Disturbingly, this resulted in abortion being the only means of contraception 

for many women, and even this was criminalised in 1966, forcing many 

women to risk illegal abortions. Securitate agents were stationed at 

gynaecological wards and were supposed to report on any women who 

requested an abortion, although they could often be bribed to ‘turn a 

blind eye’. 

However, it has been estimated that between 1966 – 

1989 this policy resulted in the death of at least ten 

thousand women and over 100,000 institutionalised 

children kept in appalling orphanages

(Tony Judt, Post war A History of Europe since 1945, Pimlico: 2007).

Elena Ceausescu became a national renowned scientist while her husband 

was dictator of Romania. But everything was a hoax. In fact, she barely 

knew how to write.  She compelled other Romanian scientists to write 

scientific papers for her. At international science gatherings she used a 

translator who would give the right answers regardless of what stupidities 

she was saying.

Elena Ceausescu is considered to have been responsible 

for the elimination of birth control measures, which led 

to a serious demographic crisis in the country during the 

70’s and 80’s. She is also alleged to have been behind 

the policies attributed to her husband, which led to the 

destruction of churches and to food rationing in the 80’s. 

She was also a member of the State Health Commission, 

which denied the existence of the AIDS virus in Romania.

Elena Ceausescu was arrested on 22 December 1989. Together with 

her husband, she was put on trial before a special Military Tribunal 

gathered together in a classroom in the military base of Tirgoviste 

on 25 December 1989.

She and her husband were accused of genocide, armed 

attacks against the population and the powers of the State, 

destruction of State buildings and institutions and undermining 

the national economy, by virtue of articles 356, 163, 165 and 145 

of the Rumanian Criminal Code.

The charges covered the whole period of the Ceausescu regime 

whereas the prosecutor, Gica Popa’s questions were concentrated 

mainly on the Timisora riots.

In particular, Elena Ceausescu was also accused of not being the author 

of scientific publications attributed to her, and for living in luxurious 

style when the Rumanian people were living in extreme poverty.

Throughout the short trial, Elena and her husband refused to 

recognise the competence of the Court and to reply to any of its 

questions, asking only to be heard by the National Assembly.

At the conclusion of the procedure, which lasted only 55 minutes, 

Elena Ceausescu was sentenced to death for committing the crime 

of genocide. She was executed together with her husband a few 

hours later.

到现在还在哪自由啦民主啦的迷阵里走动，更不知多少罪名皆由

民主自由而来，算是白白活了二十世纪中叶以来的日子啦！

大概是眼瞎吧，耳朵也聋了，再不，对不起，就是脑子残了！

还有，切记切记，民主自由之外，还有“反恐”！

多用点脑子吧，朋友们！

而失败者，只有“众恶皆归之”的份。

以之看齐奥，再适合不过。

但，万维里的脑残是唤不醒的，尤其是有背后动机而又是脑残者！
