SpaceX explosion rocks launchpad at Cape Canaveral

An explosion at a SpaceX launch site at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday, as the company was preparing to test fire the engines of its Falcon 9 rocket.

The company said there was "an anomaly" on the launch pad that led to the explosion. No one was injured, the company said.

The Air Force's 45th Space Wing said on twitter that "initial reports indicated no causalities and no threat to public safety."

Bryan Purtell, a spokesman for the 45th Space Wing, confirmed that there was an explosion and said that emergency crews were responding. "Right now we're trying to determine the extent of the damage, the exact location, possible cause and checking to make sure no one is injured," he said.

Plumes of smoke could seen rising into the air an hour after the accident. And images on social media showed a fireball shooting into the sky.

SpaceX was preparing to launch an unmanned rocket carrying a commercial satellite early Saturday from Launch Complex 40.

SpaceX, founded by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, is scheduled to launch NASA's astronauts to the International Space Station in about a year. The decision to rely so heavily on the commercial sector was considered a bold decision at the time, one that could now attract further scrutiny. The company lost another Falcon 9 rocket last year during a mission to resupply the space station. No passengers were aboard that rocket and no one was hurt.

John Logsdon, the former director at George Washington University's Space Policy Institute, said it was too early to say what the outfall would be "because we don't know what happened or why it happened and how long it's going to be before they launch again."

No matter what the cause, "it is certainly unfortunate for the broader future plans for SpaceX," he said.

The satellite that SpaceX was planning to launch Saturday was the AMOS-6, which would have been used in Facebook's first attempt to provide the Internet to rural areas from space. In a post last year, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote that the satellite would "cover large parts of West, East and Southern Africa. We’re going to work with local partners across these regions to help communities begin accessing internet services provided through satellite."

After its Falcon 9 blew up last year, the company had since bounced back, pulling off a series of successful launches. It also has captured the public's attention by landing its rockets on ships at sea or on a landing pad that it has built on the Cape.

In a statement, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said that, "as we continue to push the frontiers of space, there will be both triumphs and setbacks. But at the end of the day, I’m confident that our commercial space industry will be very successful.”

Emergency crews are "prepared for this as we know this kind of thing happens every now and again," said Dale Ketchum, the chief of Strategic Alliances at Space Florida. "Everybody is responding appropriately. It’s a tough business, but we learn and go on. It’s happened to NASA, [the Air Force] and the commercial sector, and it’ll happen again."

But Thursday's explosion is certain to be another setback, and it comes just as the rising commercial space industry was gaining confidence and momentum. Along with Boeing, SpaceX has a NASA contract to fly astronauts to the space station. The first launches are expected to happen by as soon as next year.

The explosion comes at a very bad time for SpaceX. At a space conference next month, Musk is expected to talk about how the company plans to get to Mars. The company has also said it plans to launch its Falcon Heavy, an even more powerful rocket than the one lost Thursday.
