I do not agree the problem is not enough demand. that is the surface, not the root. I believe, as all other people in other countries, Indians all want better house, better cars, better life, the problem is they do not have money to afford. the key problem is the Industrialization of India. which is too weak. compare to China, Mao Zedong put industrialization of China into the center of his task after the establishment of PRC in 1949. for industrialization, first needs capital, but at the time, China as blocked by westerns, the only way to get the fund to support Industry is to get it from farmers, however, the system in rural area was just like today's India, farm lands were owned by individual land landlords. with very in-efficient productively, Mao's way was to reform the countryside of China, make all farmers organized and with land reform. all agriculture products sold to government, with this China get the fund for industry and then the products sold back to farmers, certainly this is not an ideal way, but it was the only way for China. at the time, in 1957, lots of people asked Mao about this strategy, they think capitalism may be better way. Mao said, if we let capitalism in China now, then it is impossible for China's domestic industry to compete with them, China will become a country only provide raw materials for the western countries. under Mao's guidance, China established its complete modern industry system (although at very basic level) and by 1979 opening up to the west, western countries could use China industry system to product their products in China and now, 40 yrs later, China is the largest industry manufacture country in the world. compare to India, Nehru had all the opportunities to get western aids to build up modern industries in India, but he was also afraid western colonialism, instead of building up modern industries, he put too much effort on family workshop and mama/papa shops, by the time of opening up in 1990, it is too late. today, India's industry still cannot compete with world industry, that is why for India's trade, not many of them are industry products, but raw materials such as agriculture products or iron ore. all these things do not have too much profit on the other hand India needs industry products, that is why India has huge trade deficient. just a few years back that India was very happy about they have youngest huge population for labor force in the world, however, since India's industry is too weak, it cannot absorb so much of a labor force, now it only contributed to the huge unemployment rate, they are not the advantage of India but instead becomes a burden. this situation will not change, since the problem is too fundamental, it requires change the whole political system, complete rural land reform and total ideology, which are all impossible for India. Modi is not God, he only do so much, but unfortunately, seems he only makes things even worse for India.
