Description: EL/M-2248 Multi Function Surveillance & Threat Alert Radar is a multi-function solid-state active conformal phased array radar system developed to provide an accurate situational picture of the environment surrounding the ship. This new radar system will provide tactical information for the onboard weapon systems. It is based on multi-beam and pulse Doppler techniques along with robust electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) to effectively detect fast and stealth threats in dense clutter and jamming environments. It is suitable for both littoral and blue water missions.
The EL/M-2248, also known as Multi-Function Search and Target Acquisition Radar (MF-STAR), includes four faces providing full 360-degree coverage operating in the S-band frequency. The four radar antennas can be tailored to fit into small ships. In addition to 3D long range air surveillance, it provides missile warning, target classification; maritime surface surveillance; active and semi-active missile support; fire control for guns; and multiple targets engagement capabilities. Elta Systems has designed MF-STAR to provide high availability and low maintenance and life cycle costs.
EL/M-2248 radar faces weigh 1,500 kg each and the below deck equipment 900 kg which represents the whole system weighs 6,900 kg. It can detect a fighter aircraft flying at high altitude at ranges of up to 250 km. An low altitude incoming missile can be detected at ranges of up to 25 km. Overall, EL/M-2248 performance and appearance is similar to US Navy's AEGIS weapon system and its SPY-1D radar antenna.
