In fact, nine of the top 12 smartphone vendors call China home, according to a new report by market research firm IC Insights. Only one other vendor from outside China ¡ª South Korea's LG Electronics ¡ª is among the leading suppliers worldwide, according to the report. Notably, Samsung and Apple combined to account for more than one third of the 1.5 billion unit smartphone market last year. But behind them stand a number of Chinese brands, including Huawei, Xiamoi, ZTE, Lenovo and several other brands that are lesser known in the West.   Smartphone shipments grew by 1 percent last year, rising from 1.49 billion units to $1.5 billion units, IC Insights said. The firm projects that smartphone shipments will rise 2 percent next year to reach 1.53 billion units. IC Insights forecasts that smartphone unit shipments will continue growing at low single digit annual rates through 2021. IC Insights noted that both OPPO and Vivo, the fourth- and fifth-ranked smartphone vendors, are owned by the same China-based parent company ¡ª BBK Electronics.
