On one hand, HK has been economically stagnated for the past decade. The feeling is especially acute in comparison with a rapid economic rising of Mainland China next door. On the other hand, it is laissez faire capitalism which had carried HK through much of its heyday has now become its political burden. The uneven wealth distribution in a stagnant economy can only breed social discontent. This seething social malcontent will find its outlets in some irrational social radicalism. From the "Umbrella movement", scapegoating Mainland Chinese to the current unrest are all expressions of this social convulsion. Today, Taiwan is another example of convulsive social malcontent degenerating into massive social irrationalism. In both cases, China is being scapegoated for no good apparent reason. History's parallel can be found in the rise of Nazism in Germany in the post WWI period.
