This is one of the few articles that identifies the real issue with the plane. It is not the software in the max angle of attack system . It is the change in CG by moving the engines up and forward and the longer landing gear. The problem is the pitch up moment at certain power settings and flight regimes that caused the need for an AI system to take over from pilots . Fix the design and you don't need this angle of attack override system. Boeing modified the 737 under the old certificate of airworthiness for that model so as to avoid all the testing , design and research that would have been needed to get approval for a new model. You don't put an airplane in service that has this problem when your loading it with passengers. You need large static stability , in a fighter you need low static stability so it has max maneuverability but in a fighter you don't carry people in it. You dodge missiles and bullets in it.

This is just history repeating itself. GM got almost ran into the ground with a CEO that used make toothpaste and soap, and figured all cars should look the same, just slap a different label on them.

IBM has charted a similar path of incompetence, so has HP by closing its legendary engineering divisions that did core research and inventions that resulted in breakthroughs years later.

Same thing happened to Boeing. Companies are obsessed with short term profits instead of long term sustainability and growth. That is how CEO's and management gets paid. Short term profits by ignoring long term growth.

As soon as you higher someone with expertise in diapers, soap and bean counting to run an aircraft company, this whole debacle was just a question of when, not if.

How does a company that makes airplanes hire someone to run it without an aviation background?

This is a good glimpse into the kind of thinking that has driven GE into the ground. The very same style of management is on the verge of killing Boeing. If not for the inflated tax payer supported military contracts, this could conceivably spell the demise of Boeing as a commercial airliner builder.

Airbus with its acquisition of Bombardier has set itself at the forefront. With models like the 220, 320, 321, 330, and 350 series aircraft, they have captured the interest and support of many carriers all over the globe. With Boeing’s failures with the 737 MAX and certain 787 models, the company has placed itself in jeopardy.

Former blue chip companies, one after the other, have fallen to the lure of the big name CEO over the past few decades. CEOs who know nothing about the product they are presiding over. CEOs consumed with nothing more than the short term profit sheet. THAT is why the US has lost its competitiveness, not because of workers, not because of higher wages, health benefits or anything else. It is the all powerful short term profit that will increase even higher the pay of the CEO, never mind if long term it is bad for the company. It is not just in industry either. Consider the multi-million dollar bonuses paid to the very Wall Strreters who caused the 2007-08 economic collapse. They lost trillions of dollars for investors and were rewarded with huge bonuses, courtesy of the US taxpayer.

"The decision to launch the MAX was taken by James McNerney, the company’s first boss without a background in aviation, with a résumé that included Procter & Gamble, McKinsey, General Electric and 3M. At GE McNerney was schooled under the hard-nosed bottom-line philosophy of Jack Welch." .... In other words, he didn't know jack about aviation. Look at what has become of GE under big Jack's successors and you get an idea of what could well be happening at Boeing.
