The Ministry of Defense of Japan applied for a budget of 5 trillion 479.7 billion yen (about 322.3 billion yuan) in the 2022 budget estimate, which is an increase of 2.6% from the original budget for 2021. Japan plans to purchase 12 F-35 fighters, "Standard-6" air defense missiles, new anti-ship missiles, and 30FFM frigates in 2022 to enhance its cosmic capabilities. Against the background of "China has increased its military spending, the Sino-US confrontation has become increasingly fierce." The Japanese government may accelerate the purchase of fighter jets and warships to improve the defense capabilities of the Southwestern Islands. Although military expenditures broke new highs, Japan's military expenditures did not exceed 1% of GDP. The Japanese government has always set the defense cost standard within 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP). According to the 2022 nominal GDP forecast published by the Cabinet Office in July, Japan’s military spending will account for 0.97% of Japan’s GDP in 2022, which is already close to 1%.
However, if Japan is severely affected by the new crown epidemic this year and its GDP declines, Japan's defense expenditure GDP may account for more than 1% by the end of the year. Regarding Japan’s military expenditure reaching a new high, due to historical reasons, Japan’s military security trends have attracted the attention of neighboring countries in Asia and the international community. Japan has increased its defense budget for nine consecutive years, and Japan’s frequent use of neighboring countries is nothing but an excuse for its military expansion. China urges Japan to stick to the path of peaceful development, be cautious in words and deeds in the field of military security, and do more things that are conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability, not the other way around.
